Catalonia, European Region of Gastronomy 2016


The European Region of Gastronomy programme, which selected Catalonia in 2016 (CREG'16), aims to highlight and promote regions of Europe that actively contribute to enhancing quality of life by highlighting distinctive food cultures, education for better health and sustainability, and gastronomic innovation.  

Over 800 entities signed a manifesto to support and recognise chef Carme Ruscalleda as ambassador

The Regional Ministry Agriculture, through Prodeca, in coordination with the Regional Ministry of Enterprise and Employment, through the Catalan Tourist Board, endorsed and presented the candidacy together with Catalan entities, agents and personalities. 

The European Region of Gastronomy is an initiative promoted by a platform of European regions and organised by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT), with the support of the European institutions. 



  1. Make gastronomy a feature of distinct and unique local identity.
  2. Showcase local agri-food produce as a unique advocate of the region and the foundation for cuisine that adds a particular nuance to the culture. 
  3. Position Catalonia through its products and cuisine and as a food tourism destination.  
  4. Share knowledge and exchange experiences with other members of the European Regions of Gastronomy platform. As a pioneering holder of the Award, Catalonia has been a reference point and has had the mission of transferring all of its knowledge to future regions.
